Discover one of England’s most complete and unusual keeps at this fascinating visitor attraction in Suffolk. The unique polygonal tower keep of Orford Castle, stands beside the pretty village and former port which Henry II also developed here.
The castle is remarkably intact allowing visitors to explore from the basement, through the lower and upper halls to the roof where there are magnificent views seaward to Orford Ness. Around the rooms is a maze of passages leading to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets.
The Castle has been open on a limited basis since the 1st August with pre-booked guided tours.
5 tours per day, 10 people per tour, 5 days per week – Wednesday - Sunday inclusive.
From the week commencing Monday 5th October we are going to 3 days a week only, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, still 5 pre-booked tours per day although, we are still awaiting to hear what decisions have been made regarding the Winter Schedule.
The Shop in the Castle has been stripped bare and we are trading down in our Pay and Display car park area from a small trailer.
The increase in local visitor numbers generated by the restrictions on foreign travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a lot of vehicles in the village looking for free parking. We have had to insist that all drivers have to pay unless they are members displaying their membership parking pass. This appears to have pushed a lot of vehicles up into the village and we can only apologise to the locals for any problems this may cause for them and remind visitors that there is a large car park in walking distance by Orford Quay.
Those that have experienced our tours have been full of praise. However, we would like to remind everyone that tours have to be pre-booked and this is outside the control of our staff who, like many other establishments in this popular village, are doing their best to provide some sort of visitor experience under these strange and trying conditions.
