Very Sheltered Housing

The development at Barons Meadow was the result of a close working partnership between Orwell Housing Association, Suffolk Coastal District Council, Suffolk County Council’s Adult and Community Services, Supporting People Suffolk and the Esmond House Day Care Centre Limited.

The aims of the scheme are to:

  • enable older people from Orford and the surrounding area to stay in a home of their own;
  • extend the choice of housing available for older people who have care and support needs, as an alternative to residential care;
  • enable couples to remain together;
  • offer an environment that helps people to make choices, and
  • provide care and support to enable older people to retain their independence and control over their own lives.

The accommodation consists of six purpose-built bungalows, each of which has a lounge, kitchen (with fridge freezer and cooker), bedroom, shower room and WC, garden area and car port. Two of the bungalows have two bedrooms.

There is an emergency intercom alarm system with pull cords in each room. Pendant triggers which can be worn around the neck or wrist are also available.

The scheme is aimed at assisting people who:

  • need a minimum of four hours personal care a week, as assessed by Adult and Community Services;
  • are usually above retirement age; and
  • are resident in the Suffolk Coastal District Council area (preference being given to people living in and around Orford) or who live elsewhere but have a strong social reason for needing to move to the area.
