When the much loved and greatly missed Bernie Ingram had completed her cancer treatment she, like many other cancer patients, felt adrift and a little scared.
After making some discreet inquiries Bernie realised there was a need for some form of support for people dealing with a cancer diagnosis and so began the Orford and District Cancer Support group.
The first meeting was on a bitter January evening in 2010, at the Orford surgery when there was sheet ice covering the snow in the surgery car park! - nevertheless seven people turned up and the group has been meeting once a month ever since, but now meets in members homes on a casual rotation.
It offers non-medical but much appreciated support in relaxed surroundings to anyone who has been affected by cancer: patients, spouses, or carers. The atmosphere is upbeat, never sombre, always caring, empathetic, usually lots of laughter (and wine or soft drinks!) but always offering the opportunity for anyone who needs to talk about a concern the time and space to do so.
